MOVEABLE VEHICLE ACTIVATED SIGNS
The Parish Council has bought and installed 2 speed signs in the village. The positioning was organised by the North Yorkshire Traffic Engineer whose advice we were required to follow as part of the agreement allowing us to have signs in the village.
The signs are equiped with datalogging so we can produce traffic reports that we will publish here.
The signs are battery powered - the battery is changed every 4-6 weeks and the signs turned 180 degrees. This again is part of the agreed process we have to follow. Currently two members of the Parish Council look after these signs. If anyone wishes to volunteer to help then please speak to Dr Ian Jackson.
A summary of the traffic speed trends observed across reports from May 2023 to July 2025, focusing on Alne Road and Newton Road:
🚗 Key Trends Across Both Roads
1. 85th Percentile Speeds
- Alne Road: Remains consistently around 29–31 mph over time.
- Newton Road: Typically higher than Alne Road, ranging 31–32.5 mph, peaking at 32.5 mph (July 2023).
2. Vehicles Exceeding 40 mph
- Alne Road:
- Varies widely by month: as low as 40 (June 2025) to 374 (July 2023) per month.
- Generally trending downward in 2025 compared to 2023, with occasional spikes.
- Newton Road:
- More consistently high with 500–900 vehicles/month exceeding 40 mph in 2023.
- This dropped to ~60–100 in 2025 (when sign was facing leaving traffic) but remained high (600–700) when facing incoming traffic, e.g. April & June 2025.
3. Vehicles at 50+ mph
- Rare on both roads, typically 0–4/month, with occasional peaks:
- Newton Road: up to 30–60 in mid-2023.
- Alne Road: often 0–2, occasionally up to 8.
4. Vehicle Volume
- Alne Road: ~27,000 to 39,000/month.
- Newton Road: Typically higher, peaking over 46,000 in some months.
📉 Overall Observations
- Speed compliance is generally good: 85% of vehicles stay below 31 mph (Alne) and 32 mph (Newton).
- Excess speeders (40+ mph): declining trend in 2025, especially on Alne Road.
- Sign orientation impacts readings: Newton Road shows higher 40+ mph counts when facing traffic entering the village.
